Ears Shut

Typically when I'm at work in the early morning hours I listen to NPR. I love the voices of the newcasters as if they were old friends sitting in my office. But with the recent horror in Haiti, I've had to stop listening.

It's not attractive to cry on your paperwork.
It's not appropriate to cry at work.
It's not good to slam your fist on the desk in frustration at yet another sad story.

So, I hope things are going well there, although I'm sure they aren't much improved, but I can't tune in right now. The urge to quit my job and run down to Haiti to help organize relief efforts is too strong. And when that urge dies down, my sad no-control-over-anything feelings seep in.

Haiti -- you are in my heart.

President Elect

Congratulations, Obama.

I can't wait for you to move into the White House because you and your family are adorable and I love the 4 of you so much. You have restored my faith in the American family and the American public and the American ideal that a person can DO what they want and BE what they want no matter what.

Thank you.

Vote, I Say

Vote.
Vote now.
Do not walk.
Do not run.
Only VOTE.
Please.

Also

I watched the VP debate tonight.
And I have come to this conclusion:
Sarah Palin says "also" way too fucking much.
48 times - I counted.
And now I hate the word "also"
because it sounds weird -
like when you say a word over and over
and it loses its meaning and sense.

Change We Can Believe In

Tonight we watched Barack Obama's acceptance speech. It was incredible. The crowd was cheering and the music played and when he walked onto the stage and waved to everyone, I started to cry. It's difficult to capture the feeling of the moment - and I can only imagine how powerful it would have been in the stadium - but it was magical. For that moment it felt like Utopia: Obama would win and the world would change for the better, the American dream would be redefined.

Of course, it's not true. Corruption will go on, political splits will continue, lies and hatred will be spewed from both sides. But for that moment, it felt like world peace was achievable. All my cynicism moved aside for an intense love of country, humanity, and politics.
